Grade 2 Reading Expectations
Overview: The Emma K. Doub Elementary School focus for the 2014-2015 School Year is Reading. With daily intense integrated lessons, students will learn to love reading (especially when it is digital and gamified!) Solid reading skills are an essential building block for mastery of all other subjects.
Lexile & IRI: As reflected on the Report Card, Tested Grade 2 Reading Expectations include:
- Fall Lexile Range 350-400
- Spring Lexile Range 500-525
- Fontas & Pinnell Instructional Reading Levels: J,K,L or M
Whole Group ELA & Centers: Students will participate in both whole group and small group instruction daily during our morning ELA Block. Whole group will be used for introducing and teaching new concepts, as well as modeling. During the Center Rotations, student will have the opportunity to interdependently practice the newly learned skills. Students will also meet with Ms. Shockey daily for small group instruction and guided reading.
Writing: Writer's Workshop will be used daily in Grade 2. Students will plan, write, edit, & revise writing pieces following the Lucy Caulkins' Model. Students will be expected to increase writing stamina throughout the year, and continue to improve as articulate writers who focus on small moments. Students will conference with peers and teachers about their writing pieces to both critique and celebrate. Students will write digitally using Google Docs on the iPad!
Grade 2 Writing is broken down into 4 Units:
- Narrative Craft
- Lab Reports (Informative)
- Opinion Writing
Fundations: Students in Grade 2 will also have daily lessons in a newly introduced, county-wide word work/phonics program, Fundations. This program uses a variety of hands-on learning approaches to teach spelling, grammar, phonics, and basic writing skills. Students will have alternating spelling and Fundation quizzes on Friday mornings at 8:30am. Student will receive their "just right" words to study on Monday of the same week. These words will also be updated on Spelling City (link below), for easy online practice after school. Fundations will continue next year in Grade 3, so mastery of Grade 2 content is vital for success next year.
